The basic skills that any one considering becoming a locksmith must possess to be proficient in his or her career are as follows:

  • Basic math skills.

  • Being able to read and write very well.

  • Being able to have good eyesight (with glasses, as needed) to be able to read "E - Pluribus Unum" on the face of a penny with out strain.

  • Must be good at understanding maps and directions.

  • Enjoying long work hours with not enough pay.

  • Being VERY adapt in the use of hand and or power tools.

  • You must possess a driver's license.

  • You must be good with customers.

  • You must be as honest.

  • You MUST have a sense of humor to work in a security field.

  • Your criminal history must not include anything more felonious than parking or jay-walking tickets.

  • You must be altruistic in your attempts at security related endeavors, or else don't even think about being a Locksmith.

A great many locksmiths get their start by working as an apprentice for a seasoned locksmith or by completing a correspondence course, sometimes a combination of the two.
